Director of Business Development

Location: Remote working with occasional travel when requested to Reading office.

Duration: 6 month contract initially with options to extend.

Business Unit: Energy Distribution

Rotation: Monday-Friday


Due to succession, the client has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Business Development which is a key position that will be an influencing figure within the team. The role has management responsibility for the Business Development, Marketing and Communications, and Bid Management functions within the Directorate.

The Distributed Energy Business is a key part of the clients Energy Solutions brand, providing local energy solutions based on one or several core assets: electricity networks, heat and cooling networks, electric vehicle infrastructure, and behind-the-meter energy systems that include solar and storage. We connect and optimize our energy assets and solutions through the application of our in-house developed digital platforms, providing smart infrastructure, aggregation, data insights and flexibility. We take a "Whole Systems Thinking" approach to decarbonisation and provide long-term energy solutions that deliver cost certainty, lower carbon and high flexibility to private businesses and the public sector.

As a key member of the DE Leadership team, you will have shared responsibility for developing the growth strategy and driving performance across the business to ensure its future success. You will have responsibility for identifying opportunities which meet markets and technology requirements positioning the client as a frontrunner within the sector.

In particular, you will take overall responsibility for: -

  • building and maintaining a continuous pipeline of development activities across key markets.

  • Lead, motivate and empower all levels of staff within the Business Development team to achieve their full potential within the context of the Great Places To Work environment, and our values.

  • Define, create and deploy various initiatives ensuring the appropriate skill sets and cultures are promoted to improve efficiencies and customer experience, whilst ensuring effective development of people and structures to deliver optimal business development and sales performance.

  • Develops and implements a clear strategy to meet quality, sales and cost targets. Allocates resources effectively to meet business objectives and sets priorities. Leads the long-term requirements and plans needed to meet short- and medium-term results.

  • Has passion for and experience in working with data segmented marketing plans to build on the Energy Solution brand to differentiate itself as a trusted business to business energy systems partner.

  • Find innovative solutions including developing and testing new concepts from idea generation through initiation to implementation.

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • Funding/financial analysis/option appraisal experience of complex multi-million-pound projects.

  • Management, development, and realisation of a pipeline of strategic opportunities across short and long-term timeframes.

  • An outstanding commercially focused marketing and sales leader, with strong marketing and sales experience within large public and private sector organisations.

  • Track record in successful scale campaign management; media planning; budget management and strategic development. Track record of delivering profitable growth.

  • Highly commercial customer focused; future-thinking; delivery-focused; strength of conviction.

  • High levels of energy and enthusiasm with proven leadership skills and an ability to motivate others.
