Power Systems Engineer - Renewables

Job Description

We have a current opportunity for a Power Systems Engineer - Renewables on a permanent basis. The position will be based in Cape Town -

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Undertake power system studies for new and existing renewable and generation, undertaking simulations in Powerfactory Digsilent
  • Being the power system custodian who is responsible for the build out and upkeep of the company's grid model
  • Assisting the business development teams in identifying network related opportunities and constraints of new and existing project developments
  • Coordinate, review and approve grid code compliance study reports, protection coordination and grading studies, fault level assessments and equipment sizing recommendations rendered by service providers

Required Skillset

  • Proven relevant professional experience working in an Energy and Power Systems related role, ideally within an Engineering Design Consultancy Utility or Power Utility
  • Detailed understanding of transmission and distribution network planning including Eskom application and design review processes requirements for connecting new generators and loads;
  • Detailed understanding of the national Grid Codes and regulatory standards as related to power generation grid integration;
  • Proficient in power system studies including load flow and fault level analysis
  • Proficiency in dynamic simulation and power quality studies is an advantage
  • Advanced knowledge of power systems studies and modelling guidelines;
  • Basic understanding of control and protection principles of medium to high voltage substation equipment, overhead power lines, power cables, generators, transformers, etc.
  • Proficient in Power Factory, ETAP or PSCAD;
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing technical design documentation;
  • Exceptional levels of written and oral communication.

Qualifications and years of experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.Eng or B.Sc) in Electrical Engineering; or
  • Between 3 to 5 years relevant working experience
  • Formal training on Power Factory, ETAP or PSCAD;
