Earthstream are proud to be recruiting a Principal Functional Safety Engineer for a true leader in advanced systems integration with a focus on operational technology & digital transformation for some of the most highly regulated and challenging industrial environments.

Job Role: Principal Functional Safety Engineer

Location: Stone & Hybrid

Salary: Negotiable on skills and experience

As a Principal Functional Safety Engineer your remit will include:

The functional safety engineer will be required to apply functional safety knowledge, skill and experience to support the safety lifecycle and advise projects in the design and integration of safety systems. They will also be responsible for developing, managing and maintaining all aspects of the Functional Safety management System while supporting the team(s) in delivering the C&I Functional Safety discipline and ensuring risks to operation of plant and equipment are recognised, assessed, and mitigated.

What you will bring to the company:

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Higher level certification specific to functional safety (e.g. TÜV, FS Eng)
  • Proven significant working experience in functional safety engineering, preferably in automation, nuclear, energy or industrial sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety standards and regulations (e.g., IEC 61508, 61511, ISO 13849. etc) and their application in safety-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with safety analysis techniques such as FMEA, FTA, and DFA.
  • Generation of and/or ability to apply SRS/SDRS documentation.
  • Proficient in the use of fault modelling techniques such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA).
  • Experience with safety-related architectures and mechanisms, including fault tolerance and diagnostic coverage.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to systematically assess and mitigate safety risks.
  • Ability to participate and potentially chair HAZOP, CHAZOP, LOPA meetings and safety analysis to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
  • Hold a current full driving licence (UK or be able to easily convert to full UK)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Understanding of Full Project Lifecycle.

Desirable Skills

Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating some or all of the following:-

  • Ability to work to deadlines and budgets.
  • Awareness of /understanding of DSEAR Regulations and Hazardous area applications.
  • Site Installation and Commissioning experience of control systems. Knowledge of
  • IEC62443, NIST & OG86 cyber standards
