Hot Unit Lead - Steel Making Plant
The Steel Making Plant (STM) Hot Unit Lead will play a crucial role in the Owners Engineering Team, ensuring the successful delivery of Project Boden. Reporting to the STM Design Manager, this position requires a solid background in engineering, project management, and experience with large-scale industrial projects, preferably within the steel industry. The STM Hot Unit Lead will oversee a broad range of activities focused on design quality, coordination, and alignment, including Scrap Handling, Electric Arc Furnace, Secondary Metallurgy (LF, RH), Thin Slab Caster, and Hot Strip Mill. The successful candidate will also be responsible for implementing the company's engineering practices across the STM Hot Side.
Responsibilities:
- Define and drive critical package deliverables, resources, assurance requirements, and interfaces, depending on the number and complexity of areas.
- Establish the list (MDR) of project phase-critical technical documents and deliverables for review and assurance.
- Manage technical aspects, including:
- Defining the scope of work.
- Clarifying technical questions.
- Participating in supplier selection by providing and coordinating technical input.
- Overseeing the quality of the designs produced.
- Reviewing and resolving engineering-related issues:
- Decision-making (ownership to make or escalate timely technical decisions).
- RFI (Technical Queries) and design issues-having the expertise to make engineering judgments and escalate to the Design Manager as needed.
- MOC & Design Change Notifications.
- Deviations.
- Interfaces.
- Monitor and measure performance, including schedule and budget, report, and escalate internal and external performance-related issues for all scope within the Unit. Adopt a hands-on approach to achieve KPIs.
- Ensure adherence to schedule and robustness of the plan.
- Monitor overall Unit risks and lessons learned, ensure compliance with processes (including reviews), and ensure timely close-out.
- Ensure the Design Review & Assurance process is followed, including the scheduling of reviews.
- Conduct internal meetings, general administration, and coordination.
- Participate in reviews, including documents/deliverables and design reviews, along with any pre- and post-work.
- Manage resources, including allocation and team management, acting as the link between the core engineering team and the Design Manager.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, Chemical, or a related field).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in plant design and project management, preferably in the heavy industrial sector (ideally with direct experience in EAF-based Steel Making).
- Proven track record in large industrial greenfield projects.
- Strong knowledge of the steel industry is preferred.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
